Peak Foliage in Mt. Auburn
I believe I’ve mentioned how much I like drawing and painting in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. This week is peak foliage, so I’ve been shirking other tasks to go paint the glorious colors.

I went to the dress rehearsal for ASP’s Taming of the Shrew on Tuesday, and it was huge fun. I really like what they’ve done with this show. Die-hard feminist detractors of this play will probably still find it lacking in redemptive qualities, but Sarah Newhouse is a strong Kate, and there is a fairly clear “this-story-is-a-male-invention” frame around the whole thing that helps. ASP continues their strong tradition of musical experimentation, lively choreography, and excellent comic performances.
Here are my sketches – somewhat but not entirely chronological, because I was jumping between different digital and traditional media.

Yesterday I went to the Honk! festival parade, which ran from Davis Square to Harvard Square on Mass Ave. The music was big fun and made me wish I had come Saturday to just listen to the bands (Saturday I went to the Fuller Craft museum, and maybe I’ll post about that too). I wanted to draw the parade, because artistically very few things excite me more than people dressed in funny costumes!
I started out in Porter Square and tried to draw the parade as it came down Beech St. and turned onto Mass. Ave.
Coming to the end of the parade
I forgot how hard it is to draw a parade as it goes by. It’s just way too fast. The easier way to draw a parade, as I rediscovered, is to walk along with it.
The parade ended at, and dissolved into, Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest celebrations. I grabbed some lunch and then wandered over to draw some of the Honk! folks who were hanging out in the little park at JFK & Mass. Ave:

Here’s the final segment of my video series, in which I show how to use clipping paths to make speech balloons go behind characters’ heads. Enjoy!

This one’s probably a bit simple, really. It just shows how I draw the panel borders.

Okay, here is video #4: drawing vector balloons in InDesign. 2 more installments to come (panel borders and clipping paths). Enjoy!

Process video #4 turns out to be too long, and I need to split it into two, maybe three segments. I almost got that done before the wedding took over everything, but not quite. I’ll be finishing them up this week, though, so stay tuned!
