New Toy

Published by at 10:20 pm under tools & tech

I just bought a tablet PC. That is, a laptop with a screen you can draw on directly with an electronic pen.

My hope is that this will be revolutionary in enabling a more digital workflow for my layouts, while freeing me from my little computer corner and my CRT. Or it might just be a big waste of time and money. But I did ask around before I took the plunge, and most people who have them seem to love them, so I’m giving it a shot. It wasn’t really any more expensive than just buying a regular laptop (granted we already have 2 laptops in the house — I’m just saying it’s not as extravagant as it might be). Another nice bonus: it will allow me to do drawing & painting demos on a projector for some of my larger school visits, and it’s lighter than the laptop I currently take on those visits.

    Hi Mr. Hinds,

I ran across your work searching Beowulf out on the web. I love you style. I’m an illustrator and game artist, too. I’m on the verge of buying the new Gateway tablet PC, and wondered what you bought, and how happy you are with it.

    Cheers!

I bought a C-140X refurbished from Gateway’s eBay store. It was about $900 with shipping. In most respects I’m happy with it, but now I kind of wish I’d spent a bit more and gotten the Fujitsu 4220 (they also have an eBay store), because the Gateway is very heavy, and that bothers me more than I thought it would.

I did most of my research here:

Thanks for the info. I was looking at getting the Gateway C-141x on the recommendation of a friend who I think has your model. IT at my work said that the Toshiba had a lot of trouble. And today, asked me if I thought the Gateway was better than the Dell. Haven’t looked at the Dell. The Mac based Axiotronic tablet is interesting, but of course more $ http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook. There are rumors that they’ll soon have a MacBook Pro version out, too.

Anyway, I really enjoy your work, and I’m going to have to track down your graphic novels.
